Original Watercolors

The work of Gary C. Eckhart

The manner in which light and shadow fall across objects and enable us to visualize form and texture has always been intriguing to me. I find the interplay of cool light with warmer shadows or intense, hot light with deep, dark and cool shadows generates emotional and visual excitement. To create this quality in transparent watercolor I rely on the application of numerous, but delicate, layers of glazes with both staining and non-staining colors.

Gary takes advantage of a beautiful late winter afternoon to work on a sketch of the sugar house at the Russell Family Farm in Hinesburg, VT. The sketch will eventually become another painting in his series of sugar house subjects. The sugaring season for maple syrup lasts about four weeks in Vermont.

My original paintings are representational, not photo-realistic; however, I do try to remain true to the shapes, textures and patterns I see. I am captivated by the rich subject matter throughout Vermont and New England and especially enjoy painting the sparkle of crisp winter snow, vibrant autumn foliage and lush summer landscapes.

I want my paintings to reach out and touch the senses and emotions of the viewer and, in return, I want viewers to respond as though they could touch the textures and feel the light.

These original paintings reflect the rich coloring and texture of rural New England and Vermont. Whether it is a landscape or still life, the subjects frequently mirror an era and way of life that is gradually disappearing.
